Can You Win With Stock Robots?

Fellow Pilots,
As you know, I've been running a hangar with the five stock robots I could build using the weapons I had at level 10 or better.  None of these items have been provided by Pixonic.  Most of the robots with heavy slots come equipped with Nashorns, and I have never upgraded one of those!

For the test, I played twenty matches, most with random teammates and a few on a squad with Professor ZOSO.  Here's how it wound up: ten wins, ten losses, and a recoverable but significant drop in the ratings.  As we hypothesized at the outset, I wouldn't be able to do enough damage to finish in the top half of the damage derby.  So I got a few points in the ratings when I won, but dropped by 17-22 when I lost.

As you'd expect, it wasn't the most thrilling game play.  After the twenty battles, I made a demonstration video.  Blue loses by beacon control; it was a normal match for me - three beacons and about a half million in damage.

We've been collecting data on win rates, and we can now make some broad generalizations that hold true across all leagues in War Robots:
  • A team playing five members (because of a tanker, for example) vs. a full group of six wins 25%.
  • Players who spend all or most of their battles camped out in a sniper build usually win between 30-40%.
  • All other players tend to win between 40-60%.
  • An experienced player with good skills and upgraded gear can win 70%.
  • Pay To Win/P2W/"Whales" with fully maxed (mark 2/level 12) hangars can win over 70%, sometimes as high as 80%, in random matches.
  • "Whale squads" of 5-6 can go on long win streaks, winning 90-100% of their matches.
It is my opinion that a skilled player is viable no matter what he or she puts on the field.  The secret ingredient, of course, is you!

When we examined the cost of competing with the newest/best premium gear, we found that it would take thousands of dollars/pounds/Euros/yen to obtain and level these hangars.  The conclusion is pretty simple and apparent to all experienced pilots.  You can play War Robots for free, you can spend a bit here and there, or you can drop a ton of money to quickly put your hangar on top.  I realize that this is not a dramatic realization for most.

May your Wednesday be over as quick as a battle against a full squad of Stoned Raiders,
Dr. Yat
